Mill worker dies of fall injuries

11.03.2004 2.00 pm

A Reefton sawmill worker has died from injuries sustained in an industrial accident on Tuesday.

Bernard Joseph McInroe, 35, suffered head injuries when he fell about three metres on to a concrete floor in the Coastpine Sawmill.

He had been working for the company for only about a week.

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is investigating the incident.

Mr McInroe was working on a debarking ledge above machinery when he lost his footing and slipped under a safety chain installed previously at the direction of OSH to avoid such an incident.

Coastpine spokeswoman Gloria Gibbs said it was a freakish accident.

Second serious incident at freezing works
12 March 2004

A second worker at Richmond Ltd's Oringi freezing works has suffered serious injuries in an accident.

Hawke's Bay Today understands a cleaner broke his arm on the same conveyor belt on which a woman was strangled two weeks ago.

Occupational Safety and Health's Palmerston North manager, Linda Murphy, confirmed there had been a second incident at the meat plant near Dannevirke, but would give no details while it was under investigation.

She would say only that the incident involved "serious harm".

Cleaner Kirihora Chase died after a muslin scarf she was wearing was caught in the conveyor belt in the carton room at the works. Mrs Chase died in Palmerston North Hospital on February 25.

OSH is expected to complete its investigation into that incident at the end of next week.
