A 39-year-old woman was jailed for two years five months for benefit fraud totalling $169,599, which will mostly never be recovered.

Angela Menette Fenemor, admitted 10 charges of dishonestly using a document, and one charge of obtaining by deception.

She continued receiving support by not telling Housing New Zealand and Work and Income that she was in a relationship with her partner.

Judge Raoul Neave said Fenemor had repetitively committed the acts of dishonesty over a lengthy period.

He said it was serious benefit fraud, and it was not practicable that the amount would ever be repaid, although the Ministry could use its statutory powers of recovery, and payments could be made when she is in employment.

Fenemor did not tell the Ministry of her change of circumstances in 2007. She received an overpayment of her benefit of $107,720. She was paying a lower income-related rent, for which was another $61,879 was overpaid.

Judge Neave sentenced Fenemor to prison for two years and five months.

Just wondering if her "partner" is also going to be punished because wasn't there new provisions under law recently introduced?
