This may be of interest to some to read the fine print of, including readers comments.

Healthcare Isn't A Free Market, It's A Giant Economic Scam

from the destroying-us-all dept

Not long ago, someone I know who had no medical insurance, but who had some serious medical issues, ended up in the hospital for a few weeks. Some procedures needed to be done, but nothing that most people would consider too "drastic." Eventually, the bills showed up, and they were in the range of half a million dollars, for someone who did not have anything close to that. You hear stories about crazy medical bills, but what very few people realize is that the reality of hospital bills can often be orders of magnitude more crazy than what most people expect. Just last week, a friend of mine posted the following image to Facebook, noting that when his normal medical insurance billing statement has room for seven digits (i.e., millions of dollars) something is clearly screwed up.

Hukildaspida I wonder what world you are living in?

I appreciate accform members mostly live in a world of 'entitlements' (I mean they consider they are entitled to everything for nothing) but some of us work for our living.

If anyone should be well paid it is the medical profession.

They are the best and the brightest and likely to be able to succeed at almost anything.

Their jobs not only require enormous and difficult training but they are expected to maintain the highest standards, personal as well as professional, at all times - and they have to bury their mistakes, not something easily hidden, forgiven or forgotten.

If you want to point a finger at people who 'earn too much' there are a huge range of people and occupations you should line up first.

Folk in the Medical professions all over the world, receive varying salaries.

Some very specialized surgeons get nicks per week in some countries. Some receive a little more than a few hundred/month.... Some Russians escape Russia with massive degrees in surgery fields. Here of course they are not allowed to practice unless they completely retrain. HUH.... they are mostly way more qualified and experienced than our Kiwi blokes...

Go to Thailand for cheaper surgery...where there are Americans, English, Kiwi surgeons over there so many days or weeks per year making a quick few easy bucks without all the fuss and bother. Some even set up offices there.

It's Insurance companies and Private interests along with the 'MEDICAL and PHARMICUETICAL COMPANIES' whom dictate in countries over-inflated SALARIES and SUPERANNUATION packages... costing everyone $$$$'s that most cannot at all afford. Even Health Ins is dictated at huge blown out costs.... Unbelievable that the Govt still takes huge taxation for our Public hospitals to run with 'Top Heavy' tiers..... those unnessary tiers cost us to much..

Perhaps you miss my point.

It is not the medical professionals who are responsible for our societies financial structures and if anyone should be (very) well paid it is our Doctors (and nurses and others) who should.

if any accforum posters still work at all they should try working in a fish factory assembly line, say, and then compare their work and pay with that of the company manager managers and accountants.

Who does the work and who gets the money is the question.
